OBD-II support within the Telemetry Overlay software
OBD-II (also OBD2 or OBDii) stands for On-board diagnostics. It is a standard vehicle manufacturers follow to enable monitoring and problem solving via electronic means. While this typically means being able to see and clear ECU error messages, the communication port also conveys live performance data that is useful for telemetry visualization.

Almost every commercial car sold in the last 20 years uses this standard and has a communications port available near the steering wheel. There are multiple adapters in the market that enable communication between the car and a mobile phone, including inexpensive ones like Veepeak or Elm327, and higher-end models with advanced features. This is a great alternative to recording GPS data with an action camera, as it combines the precision of instrument-based sensors like speedometer, engine RPM, throttle, temperatures and pressures with reliable GPS data captured by the smartphone.
